The ranking on the women singles tennis circuit is becoming a farce because one can find players who have never won a major grand slam title or any major event are ranked top in the world. It all started with both the William sister’s getting injured and playing less on the WTA circuit. First it was, Marat Safin’s sister Dinara Safina from Russia becoming the no.1 ranked singles player in the world on the women’s circuit without having won a major title and that was in the year 2009, from then on one has seen many other new faces who have donned the top position.
The latest one is Caroline Wozniacki who doesn’t have any major singles title under her belt on the WTA circuit but due to absence of top players like Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Serena and Venus Williams from the singles circuit due to injuries and personal reasons these new stars have climbed the ranking ladder but yet haven’t showed their true potential in major events like the Grand Slams.
Serena and Venus have won many Grand Slam titles among them but they were languishing out of top 10 rankings for sometime due to absence because of injuries. The topsy turvy ranking system is going haywire with all kinds of players who don’t even seem to have that killer instinct to capture Grand Slam titles year-after-year like Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. In the last decade few players to win Grand Slam titles with some consistency are the William sisters and Justine Henin.
