Early Spain
Spain is one of the European countries which have seen many battles on its land. All these battles were mainly fought internally for becoming the ruler of Spain because in earlier days Kings use to rule the entire country. There were many princes in the kingdom who were hungry for power and with support of different super powers of Europe like England, Portugal and France they use to individually launch attack on the King of Spain to dethrone him and capture the crown of King. Whenever European super powers like England, Portugal and France use to help in wars they had certain greed or were against the policies of the ruler.
Abolishment of Monarchy
In the year 1931 Spain was declared as a republic and monarchy was overthrown and election was held and new government was elected but in 1936 military generals who called themselves as nationalist led a coup against the government which was led by socialist and republicans. The war came to an end with the military overpowering the government. The military ruled Spain till 1975.
Spain Today
In 1975 democracy was again brought into birth and in 1978 Spain’s constitution was established as parliamentary monarchy with elected President was given supreme power to lead the Government and the country and this president acted as a prime-minister of the country. Again in 1981 the military tried to overpower the government but the since the King is considered as head of state in Spain’s parliamentary monarchy, the King himself was chief of the army and that enabled him to control the army, majority of which remained loyal to him and there was no danger to democracy.
There are many political parties in Spain which fight elections every five years. Spanish Socialist Workers Party and People’s Party are the two major political parties in Spain and have led Spain for many years. Spain has two houses in their parliamentary monarchy: Congress of Deputies and Senate. The party which wins most seats rules the Country.
